Here’s a simple recipe for homemade sweet chili sauce:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup rice vinegar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-2 red chili peppers, finely chopped (adjust according to your spice preference)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions:
- Prepare the chili peppers: Remove the stems from the chili peppers and finely chop them. If you prefer less heat, remove the seeds before chopping.
- Combine sugar and water: In a saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and 1/2 cup of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.
- Add rice vinegar and garlic: Once the sugar has dissolved, add the rice vinegar and minced garlic to the saucepan. Stir well to combine.
- Add chopped chili peppers: Add the chopped chili peppers to the saucepan. If you prefer a milder sauce, you can start with less chili peppers and add more according to your taste.
- Simmer: Allow the mixture to simmer over low heat for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly and the flavors meld together.
- Thicken the sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the saucepan while stirring continuously. Continue to simmer for another 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has reached your desired consistency.
- Cool and store: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the sweet chili sauce cool to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer it to a clean jar or bottle for storage. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
