Ingredients:
- For the Burger Patties:
- 1 pound ground beef (80% lean for juiciness)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- For the Toppings:
- 1 medium tomato, sliced
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 avocado, sliced
- 4 large lettuce leaves (romaine or iceberg work well)
- 4 slices of cheese (optional)
- Pickles (optional)
- For the Sauce (optional):
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (for a hint of sweetness)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Burger Patties:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
- Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, pressing them down slightly in the center to help them cook evenly.
- Cook the Burger Patties:
- Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the patties on the grill or in the skillet.
- Cook the burgers for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium, or longer if you prefer your burgers more well done. If using cheese, place a slice on each patty about a minute before the burgers are done to melt it.
- Prepare the Sauce (optional):
- In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, honey, salt, and pepper. Mix well until the sauce is smooth and creamy. Adjust the sweetness and seasoning to your preference.
- Assemble the Lettuce Wrap Burgers:
- Wash and dry the lettuce leaves. Select the largest leaves to serve as your “buns.”
- Place one lettuce leaf on a plate as the base. Place the cooked burger patty on top of the lettuce. Add your desired toppings: a slice of tomato, a few slices of onion, avocado, and pickles.
- Drizzle with the sauce if using.
- Top with another lettuce leaf, folding the edges slightly to encase the burger inside.
- Serve:
- Serve the lettuce wrap burgers immediately, with a side of your favorite dipping sauce or a salad for a complete meal.
Tips:
- Beef Alternatives: You can substitute the ground beef with ground turkey, chicken, or even plant-based patties if you prefer.
- Lettuce Variety: Romaine lettuce is ideal due to its sturdy leaves, but iceberg also works well for extra crunch. Make sure the leaves are large enough to hold the burger patty.
- Toppings: Customize your toppings with your favorite burger condiments like ketchup, mustard, or sautéed mushrooms for added flavor.
