recipe for cheesy scalloped potatoes:
Ingredients:
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1.5 to 2 cups milk
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour until the mixture becomes paste-like and light golden brown.
- Gradually whisk in the milk so that no lumps form, and continue cooking and stirring until the mixture thickens. This will be your cheese sauce.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in 1.5 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until it’s melted and the sauce is smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste.
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in a lightly greased baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Enjoy your cheesy scalloped potatoes!
