Slow cooker cube steaks with gravy is a delicious and convenient comfort food dish. Here’s a simple recipe to make this meal:
Ingredients:
- 4 cube steaks
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary (optional)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil for browning
- 2 tablespoons butter (optional for added richness)
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Begin by browning the cube steaks. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season the cube steaks with salt, pepper, and paprika. Dredge each steak in flour, making sure to coat both sides. Then, brown the cube steaks in the skillet for 2-3 minutes on each side until they’re golden brown. Transfer them to your slow cooker.
- In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if needed and sauté the sliced onions and minced garlic until they become translucent and fragrant. This should take about 3-4 minutes. Scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet as the onions cook.
- Pour in the beef broth and stir well, making sure to incorporate any flour that might be sticking to the skillet. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then pour it over the cube steaks in the slow cooker.
- If you want to add some extra richness to your gravy, you can also add a couple of tablespoons of butter at this stage.
- Add the dried thyme and rosemary, if desired, for extra flavor. You can also use other herbs or seasonings of your choice.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on the low setting for 6-8 hours, or until the cube steaks are tender and the flavors have melded together.
- About 30 minutes before serving, mix 1/2 cup of flour with 1/2 cup of water until smooth to create a slurry. Stir this slurry into the slow cooker to thicken the gravy. You can adjust the thickness by adding more or less of the slurry mixture.
- Continue cooking for the remaining 30 minutes.
- Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning as needed with salt and pepper.
- When ready to serve, sprinkle chopped fresh parsley on top for a burst of color and freshness (if desired).
Serve your slow cooker cube steaks with gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, and enjoy a hearty, comforting meal.
